Review submissions’ should be related to maritime strategy, operations, doctrine and planning, regional security studies, coalition warfare, international law, operations other than war, technology, defense economics, civil relations (including media), war gaming, leadership, military ethics, or history. The Review avoids articles on bureaucratic matters not bearing on the subjects above, tactics and procedures, sociological or personnel issues, and “bureaucratic public relations.” A survey of previous Review issues may help authors determine whether this is the right venue for their work.
Note: The Press cannot make predictions or express interest in hypothetical or un-received articles or their subject matter. When in doubt, we encourage authors to submit their work.

- Spacing: Double (do not add extra space between paragraphs, except at the start of new section)
- Margins: 1 inch all around
- Alignment: Left align, ragged right edge. Use a .5 inch indentation for the first line of all paragraphs that do not start a new section

Length of our articles is approximately 6,000 to 16,000 words, but we occasionally make an exception if required by the material and treatment. Shorter works, such as Commentary, Research & Debate, In My View (letters to the editor), and review essays, are typically 1,100 to 2,500 words.
Submit your article
Send your complete and properly formatted submission to firstname.lastname@example.org. From receipt through publication, our assistant editor coordinates processing of all submissions. Authors can expect to receive periodic updates regarding status, and should contact submissions with any questions or concerns.
Submitted articles will be sent to the editor for his initial decision to decline publication, send the article for blind peer review, or grant provisional acceptance (very rare at this point).
Peer review involves engaging three highly qualified persons (considered to be experts on the subject matter) to read the article and provide us detailed reports. Once received, the editor reviews the reports and will decide whether to decline publication, ask the author for revisions, or grant provisional acceptance (again, rare at this point). Authors who receive a revision request will be provided referee reports and a brief description of what the editor is looking for from the revision.
Revised articles will be sent to the editor for his decision. He will either provisionally accept the article or decline publication.
Provisionally accepted articles
Accepted articles will go to the managing editor for editing; in 2–4 weeks he will contact the author to work out final revisions. When both are satisfied, the article will be sent to the dean.
Decisions on Review submissions
Decisions on Review submissions are based primarily on intellectual and literary merit, clarity (organization of thesis, evidence, and argument), timeliness, value, and interest to our wide readership.
Final determination on provisionally accepted articles rests with the dean. Articles given final acceptance will be assigned to the next issue having adequate available space. Prior to publication, all issue assignments are tentative; changes are (quite often) beyond our control, although we make every effort to avoid them.
Essays, Commentary, Research and Debate, and In My View
Essays, Commentary, Research and Debate, and In My View go through some of the same steps as article submissions—sometimes unique to each submission—at the discretion of the editor.
