Professor Lyle Goldstein, China Maritime Studies Institute, testified before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission's “Hearing: China’s Global Quest for Resources and Implications for the United States” on Jan. 26.  He spoke on Panel V: China’s International Fishing Activities.  Click HERE to read his testimony.

Professor Martin Cook, the Admiral James Bond Stockdale Professor of Professional Military Ethics, discussed “Reflections on the Stockdale Legacy” as the speaker for the University of San Diego’s 15th annual James Bond Stockdale Leadership Symposium, which focuses on some of the difficult moral and ethical issues facing military officers today. The Symposium is hosted by NROTC San Diego Battalion.

Cmdr. James Kraska, International Law Department, delivered a presentation titled "Maritime Security Law in USCENTCOM" to the CENTCOM Staff Judge Advocate Legal Conference at CENTCOM Forward Headquarters in Doha, Qatar, on Jan. 24. The three-day conference featured senior civilian and military lawyers, and Commander Kraska's presentation supports General Mattis' call for starting to think about CENTCOM as a maritime theater.  Professor Kraska is the Howard S. Levie Chair of Operational Law.

Maj. Matt Hover, International Law Department, recently returned from a trip with the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS) to Krakow, Poland where he taught Human Rights Law, Detention, Law of Armed Conflict, and Rules of Engagement to leaders from Poland's 6th Airborne Brigade.  DIILS invited Professor Hover to lecture as part of their program due to his experience gained from serving as a legal advisor in both Iraq and Afghanistan.  The 6th Airborne Brigade is preparing to deploy to Afghanistan for the 12th rotation of Poland's Task Force White Eagle, which operates in the Ghazni Province.

Col. Robert Cassidy, Joint Military Operations Department, discussed Pakistan and its contradictions, on Jan. 25 as part of the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy's lecture series at Salve Regina University.  Professor Cassidy is also a senior fellow with the Center for Advanced Defense Studies.
