Additional Academic Opportunities

Beyond our core curriculum and robust electives program we offer a variety of related academic opportunities to enhance your educational experience. These include Regional Study Groups, mentored individual research, and of course the highly regarded Field Studies Program (FSP). These opportunities both complement, and in some cases, are taken in lieu of core or elective offerings. Thought provoking and timely academic conferences and symposia round out your NWC educational experience.

Individual Advanced Research Projects (ARPs)

The Individual ARPs allows qualified students to undertake individual research projects that substitute for single core courses.

Regional & Specialized Study Groups

The Naval War College’s seven regional studies groups have become strategic assets in the war on terrorism and in future military operations; they have also helped to support the CNO's maritime security cooperation initiatives. Students are invited to participate as their schedule permits during their academic year.

Symposia and Conferences

The academic life at the Naval War College is enhanced by several conferences and symposia. Some are held annually and some are less frequent. These programs afford students and faculty opportunities for stimulating encounters with contemporary military, political, and cultural leaders from both the professional and academic communities.

The Field Studies Program consists of a series of visits and single-day field trips designed to provide NSC students with a balanced understanding of U.S. society, institutions, and culture.
