Pre-arrival Information:

  • Lodging: Our course registrars reserve a block of rooms with Central Billeting for each of our classes 30 days prior to your class convening. Please contact Central Billeting @ 401-841-7900 (DSN: 841) for questions concerning your reservations.
  • Uniform requirements:
    • Classroom: Service Khakis. Recommend bringing a sweater or jacket as it tends to get cool in our classrooms. Leather flight jackets are authorized for aviators.
    • Field Trip to RTC Great Lakes (PCO’s only): Travel in appropriate civilian attire. During the tour of RTC Great Lakes uniform will be: Service Dress Blues (October - April) / Summer Whites (May - September). We will only take carry-on luggage for the flight to/from RTC.
  • Per Diem: Recommend not drawing advance per diem prior to arrival at Naval Leadership & Ethics Center. Upon check-in, part of our process will be completing per diem requests which equate to 100% Cost of Lodging and $71.00 CMR (Commercial Meal Rate). The only portion of your stay that you will not be advanced will be the RTC Great Lakes Lodging. (PCO’s only)
  • Directions/ Parking: The Naval Leadership & Ethics Center is located in Perry Hall (Bldg 440), 440 Meyerkord Avenue, Newport, RI, approximately ¾ of a mile from the Newport Chalet/BOQ. Parking for POV’s is provided on the north side of the Senior Enlisted Academy across from Perry Hall east of Whipple Street.
  • Course Preparation/ Read-ahead Material: PCO/ PXO/ PCMC/COB see your course pre-requisite page for additional information and read ahead material.
  • Course Schedule: Report NLT 7:00 a.m. for PCMC/COB/ 7:15 a.m. for PXO/PCO/ 7:30 a.m. for PMCC with your Original Orders and Page Two
    • Class Schedule: 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. daily
    • Last Day Schedule: PXO’s finish Thursday at 3:00 p.m. All other courses will finish by 3:00 p.m. Friday. It takes an hour to get to Providence Airport from Newport barring unforeseen traffic delays. Provide three hours buffer between end of class and flights from Providence
  • Social schedule: There is one social each week, appropriate casual civilian attire is required for both events. There are no coat & tie events during the course.
  • Additional Expenses:
    • Social(s): $18 - PCO/PXO/CMC/COB; $10 - PMCC/CSLC/CMCS
    • PCO Recruit Training Command Trip: $62.00 (Please bring exact change)
  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI): MBTI Brief will be conducted as a joint session with PCO’s and their Spouses, PXO’s, PCMC/PCOB’s and their Spouses.    
  • NLEC App: The class schedule, watchbill, end-of-course survey, required readings and case-studies for your upcoming leadership course at NLEC will be accessed digitally via a custom-built application (NLEC Companion App), available for free in the Apple App Store. If you already have an Apple iTunes account (Apple ID), please remember to bring your username and password with you on your first day of class. If you do not have an Apple iTunes account (Apple ID), please create one prior to next Monday by following the directions listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534. No credit card information is required. If you already own an iPad or other Apple iOS device, we recommend you bring it for use in the classroom (wireless access will be available). If you do not own an iOS device, you will be issued an iPad 2 for use during your leadership course in Newport. An app is not available for non-iOS devices (Android, etc.). If you don't already have a web based email account (Hotmail, gmail, etc.), please set one up prior to your arrival. On your first day of class we will walk you through the process of setting up wireless access and the NLEC Companion App on your own iOS device or on one of our loaner iPads. You can install the app onto your personal iOS device(s) prior to arriving; however your password will not be issued until the first morning.

  • Limited child care is available for children six weeks to six years old.
  • Please contact the Child Development Center Operations Clerk and ask for a list of Child Development Home Providers (drop off care).
  • The Child Development Home Providers are federally certified (if they reside in Government Quarters) or by the State of Rhode Island (if they reside off base).
  • Other options for Child Care:

Round Trip service available between airport and BOQ.
Cost: $25.00; runs every hour until midnight. Check baggage claim area for services available.

FROM T.F. GREEN (PROVIDENCE) AIRPORT:

**Note: there is a $4.00 per car toll on the Claiborne Pell Bridge**

Theodore Francis Green Memorial State Airport to NS Newport

  1. Head northeast on Airport Connector Rd go 0.4 mi
  2. Slight right to stay on Airport Connector Rd go 1.1 mi
  3. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for I-95 S/New York and merge onto I-95 S go 5.3 mi
  4. Slight left onto RI-4 S/Col Rodman Hwy (signs for N Kingstown) go 9.9 mi
  5. Continue onto US-1 S/Tower Hill Rd go 0.7 mi
  6. Take the RI-138 E ramp to Jamestown/Newport go 0.4 mi
  7. Slight left onto RI-138 E/ Partial toll road ($4.00) / go 8.8 mi
  8. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for Fall River/Cape Cod and merge onto RI-138 E go 0.7 mi
  9. Take the exit toward Admiral Kalbfus Rd go 0.2 mi
  10. Turn right onto Admiral Kalbfus Rd go 0.2 mi
  11. At the traffic circle, continue straight to stay on Admiral Kalbfus Rd go 0.2 mi
  12. Continue onto Training Station Rd and proceed through Gate 1 NS Newport

FROM POINTS SOUTH:

**Note: there is a $4.00 per car toll on the Claiborne Pell Bridge**

  1. Take 95 North to Rt 138 East (exit 3 in Rhode Island).
  2. Follow Rt 138 East to Rt 1 intersection.
  3. Take Rt 1 North (left turn).
  4. Take first exit to Route 138.
  5. Continue on Rt 138 over Jamestown bridge (free) & Newport bridge ($4.00).
  6. Off Newport bridge, stay in left lane and follow signs for Rt 138 Fall River/Cape Cod.
  7. Take right at yield sign onto ADM Kalbfus Rd (Jai Alai across intersection). Go under the overpass.
  8. Proceed through rotary. Take second exit in rotary (Mama Leone's Restaurant on right).
  9. Continue straight to Gate 1.

FROM POINTS NORTH:

**Note: there is a $0.10 toll per vehicle there are no toll booths your car will be charged by your license plate.**

  1. From Interstate 95 take 195E to Rt 24 South.
  2. Follow Rt 24 around Fall River to Rt 114 South.
  3. Continue on 114 through Portsmouth, Middletown and Newport.
  4. Turn right across from Ruby Tuesday's onto Coddington Hwy.
  5. Proceed to rotary take first exit in rotary (Mama Leone's Restaurant on right).
  6. Continue straight to Gate 1.
