The following procedure is in effect to facilitate visitor requests to the Naval War College Library:

All persons having valid Department of Defense (DoD) identification are granted access to Naval Station Newport (NAVSTANPT). A Force Protection Condition is currently limiting access to NAVSTANPT by non-DoD persons. In order for visitors to gain access to NAVSTANPT, the Naval War College compound, and the Library, a completed and up-to-date Visitor’s Form must be on file with the Library.

Please contact the Head, Reader Services at 401-841-2642 to initiate a visit request or send an e-mail to to obtain a copy of the Visitor Form electronically. This must be filled in completely – visitor’s full name, Social Security number, date and time of requested visit, company or university/college affiliation and the reason for requesting access to the Library – and returned to the Library.

Once this form has been approved, access to the Library may be granted. Please allow 48 hours for NAVSTANPT Gate Security and NWC Security to approve access, allowing the individual to visit the Library on the date and time specified.

Although the Library’s primary mission is to support the research requirements of faculty, staff, and students of the Naval War College community, permission for visitors to use its collections for research is granted on a case-by-case basis. The Head, Reader Services and the Library Director will also determine on a case-by-case basis whether to allow circulation privileges to the visitor.

Since most items in the Naval War College Library collection are available via interlibrary loan through any college/university or public library in the United States, the Library encourages researchers to first work with a reference librarian at their library or institution; then, if materials needed are not readily available through interlibrary loan, a visitor request may be initiated for access to the NWC Library.

The College’s Attire Policy states that proper professional attire should be worn at all times. By initialing the Visitor Form, the visitor indicates that all rules – security sign-in, badge and dress requirements – are understood.

All visitors to the Library must enter the Naval War College through the main entrance in Spruance Hall, sign in with Security (Quarterdeck), and obtain a NWC Visitor’s Badge. Visitors will then proceed to the Library, sign in at the Circulation Desk, and obtain a Library Visitor’s Badge. Both badges are to be worn at all times. When leaving, the visitor will return to both the Circulation Desk and to Security (Quarterdeck) to sign out and return each badge.

Visitors who wish to use the Library on a continuing basis must keep an up-to-date Visitor Form on file in the Library. This form expires on December 31st each year and may be renewed/extended, if needed.
