Captain Roy Petty joined the Naval War College, Joint Military Operations Faculty in July 2009 following his tour as Commanding Officer, Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command where he oversaw the defense of Navy computer networks worldwide. Prior to this tour he served on United States Naval Forces Central Command / Commander FIFTH Fleet as the Information Operations Officer. Afloat tours include his initial assignment to USS O’Brien (DD 975) as a Surface Warfare Officer where he deployed to the Persian Gulf participating in Operation PREYING MANTIS and reflagged tanker escort operations in support of Operation EARNEST WILL; assignment to Naval Security Group Activity, Ft. Meade, MD where he completed seven submarine and surface deployments supporting national intelligence operations and Operation DESERT STORM; and assignment to Commander Carrier Group FOUR. Captain Petty’s joint experience includes assignment to the staff of the National Cryptologic Representative, Korea and at United States Joint Forces Command, Norfolk, VA where he led JFCOM efforts supporting the Office of the Secretary of Defense Information Operations Roadmap implementation plan. CAPT Petty is a graduate of the University of Texas-Arlington with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He was commissioned through Officer Candidate School, Newport, RI in February, 1986 and earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in 1997. Captain Petty is JSO qualified and in 2009 was recognized as a Federal 100 winner and with the Department of Navy, Chief Information Officer IM/IT Award for his leadership in advancing the Navy’s Computer Network Defense mission.
