The public may view the Library’s holdings through the Military Education Research Library Network (MERLN) at http://merln.ndu.edu . Once on the MERLN Web page, choose "Public Search" from the links on the right sidebar. This will take you to the MERLN Group Catalog Basic Search screen. Enter your search terms. Browse the list of search results and see if any item interests you. Click Libraries: MERLN Catalog under the item’s title to determine if the Naval War College (US, RI NAVAL WAR COL) owns that item.

VISITING

Naval Station Newport is at a Force Protection Condition that limits entry to the Naval Station by anyone who does not possess a valid DOD (Department of Defense) identification. As the Naval War College Library is located on Naval Station Newport, this limited entry applies to all visitors who wish to use the Naval War College Library.

At the present time it is not known how long heightened Force Protection Conditions will remain in effect. Additionally, if the condition increases to a higher level, visitors will not be able to access Naval Station Newport under any circumstances.

All visitors to the Library must have a visitor's form on file with the Library. In addition, visitors must request gate access through the Library or the visitor's contact in an academic department. The following procedure is in place to facilitate visitor requests.

  • Contact Head, Reader Services at (401) 841-2642 a minimum of 48 hours prior to the visit.
  • Provide name, Social Security Number, date and time of requested visit, company or university/college affiliation and explanation for requesting access to the Naval War College Library.
  • If both Naval War College Security and Naval Station Newport Security approve the request, access will be granted to enter Naval Station Newport and the Naval War College on the date and time specified.

The Naval War College Library is funded and staffed to support the Naval War College community. Permission for non-Naval War College personnel to use its facilities is granted on a case-by-case basis for research purposes requiring the use of materials that are not readily available elsewhere.

The bulk of the materials in the Naval War College Library are available via interlibrary loan through any college/university or public library in the United States. Many research needs can be addressed in this manner, therefore it is strongly urged that researchers work with a reference librarian at their library before planning a trip to the Naval War College Library.

The Naval War College requires proper professional attire to be worn at all times. Jeans, shorts, jogging suits, sweat suits, etc. are not acceptable attire for Library visitors. Visitors who are not wearing proper attire may be denied admittance to the College and the Library.

All visitors, including those who have a completed Library Visitor Form on file, must sign-in at the Circulation Desk, obtain a Library Visitor Badge and wear the badge at all times while in the Library. Library visitors who leave the Library to go to areas of the College other than the restrooms will be required to sign-out at the Circulation Desk and return the Library Visitor Badge. Visiting other parts of the College requires signing-in with Security and obtaining a Naval War College Visitor Badge.

Visitors who wish to use the Library on a continuing basis must keep a valid, up-to-date Library Visitor Form on file. The form expires on December 31st each year and will not be automatically updated. The visitor's initials on the form indicate that all rules in regards to security sign-in, badge and dress requirements are understood.

Circulation privileges are rarely granted to visitors as the Library's collections are in place to support the students, faculty and staff of the College. Requests for circulation privileges are considered on a case-by-case basis by the Head, Reader Services and the Library Director. Such requests require 48 hours for consideration. No exceptions will be made to this rule as adequate time is necessary to do the required paper work. If permission is granted to check out books, visitors can have no more than 10 items charged-out at any given time.
