Asia-Pacific Studies Group

MISSION

The Asia-Pacific Studies Group acts as a catalyst, coordinator and implementer of research to serve the requirements of the Navy, the U.S. Pacific Command and other elements of the United States Government responsible for formulating policy, strategy and planning related to Asia and the Pacific.

It joins those personnel of the Naval War College and the Navy Warfare Development Command who are engaged in work on Asia and the Pacific.

APSG MEMBERSHIP

The APSG draws from the four research departments within the Center for Naval Warfare Studies (Strategic Research; Wargaming; Warfare Analysis and Research Department; and International Law Department) and from the War College's three teaching departments (Strategy and Policy, National Security & Decision making; and Joint Military Operations). Personnel from the Naval Warfare Development Command also contribute to its activities. All members have a deep interest in the future of Asia and the Pacific and implications for the United States. Many in the APSG have either lived, studied, or served in the region.

Members of the APSG are closely involved in the War College's teaching and research activities. Through the core curriculum and the electives program, faculty members teach a wide array of courses in the history, politics, and military affairs of the major countries of the Asia-Pacific region. The research contributions of APSG faculty members encompass strategic assessments, regional security, diplomacy, alliance relations, technological and military development, and U.S. policy in the Asia-Pacific region. Particular attention is devoted to greater China, Japan, Korea, and Russia, with additional attention to South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Central Asia.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

In addition to assisting U.S. national security policy makers, the APSG serves as the War College's principal forum for addressing a full range of Asia-Pacific strategy and policy issues. The APSG's activities include monthly group meetings; sponsorship of a visiting speaker's program; dissemination of research in progress and publication of final research results; and leadership of the Asia-Pacific Forum, an annual conference convened each summer.

The APSG has also initiated a long-term collaborative research relationship with the Maritime Staff College of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force. The colleges have established parallel study groups that will undertake comparative strategic assessments on major defense and foreign policy issues of concern to both countries and to both navies. The study groups will meet semi-annually to compare research findings, to disseminate papers and publications, and make recommendations to their respective leaderships.
