But first, credit where it is due: This column is informed, in part, by a seminar for the executives and producers of NBC-TV presented by General Barry R. McCaffrey, USA (Ret.), from material gained from the Association of Retired Intelligence Officers (AFIO), from Stratfor.com, a private intelligence-gathering company, from some flag officer friends, from my civil-engineer cousin, and from the CIA World Book of Facts. Lieutenant General Michael T. Flynn (CNW 2001) is assistant director of National Intelligence for Partner Engagement
On September 26, Newport Daily News wrote:
The good news continues for the Flynn family of Middletown. Three weeks ago, Charles A. Flynn was promoted to brigadier general. On Friday, his brother, Michael T. Flynn, (shown left) 52, was promoted from major general to lieutenant general, after confirmation by the U.S. Senate. His assignment is assistant director of National Intelligence for Partner Engagement, Office of the Director National Intelligence in Washington, D.C.
Both generals are graduates of Middletown High School and the University of Rhode Island's ROTC program. They are the sons of Helen Flynn of Middletown and the late Charles Flynn, two of their nine children. Older brother Jack Flynn, who lives in Portsmouth, said Michael Flynn "is a selfless person and a true patriot who seldom speaks about himself but has said to me his No. 1 job is to protect our country's freedoms."
Mike Flynn is married to his high school sweetheart, the former Lori Andrade; the couple has two sons. He spent his teenage years washing dishes at The Pier restaurant and cooking at The Chart House, both located in Newport, as well as lifeguarding at Sachuest Beach, Jack Flynn said.
"Mike is one of those seemingly ordinary people that was called to do extraordinary things during times of strife for his country," his brother said. "And somehow through it all, he has remained stable, humble and very much the three-star general he has grown to become."
Three weeks ago, various members of the large Flynn family flew to Fort Leavenworth in Kansas to see Charlie's promotion ceremony, at which Mike pinned the star to his brother's uniform.
The two brothers have spent extensive time in Iraq and Afghanistan during their military careers. "Both of my brothers in the Army are straightforward and exceptional people looking for nothing more than to get into the front line, get the job done and return their soldiers back to their families," Jack Flynn said. In an email message Charlie Flynn sent to his newly promoted brother, the younger general wrote: "A long time in the making but you are now a three-star lieutenant general. Way to go, dude."
