Captain D’Angelo attended Penn State University and was commissioned as an Ensign through the NROTC program after graduation in May 1986. He completed Surface Warfare Officer School and reported to the USS FORRESTAL, (CV 59) where he earned his Surface Warfare Officer designation.
He reported for flight training and he received his wings as a naval aviator in April 1991. He flew H-3 Sea King and H-60F/H Sea Hawk helicopters in HS-1, HS-10 and HS-11, deploying onboard USS AMERICA (CV 66), USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73), USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) and USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65). He served as commanding officer of the Dragonslayers of HS-11 and led the squadron through a deployment in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM.
D’Angelo has served on the staffs of Commander, Carrier Air Wing One, Commander, Naval Air Forces, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, on the faculty of the Naval War College, and as Deputy Commander, Navy Region Southwest Asia. He is currently assigned to the Naval War College, as the Deputy Chairman of the War Gaming Department.
D’Angelo has accumulated over 3900 flight hours, including more than 2500 in the H-60. He has been awarded the Legion of Merit (two awards), the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), and other personal, campaign and service awards. He holds a Master of Science Degree from Central Michigan University, and a Master of Arts from the U.S. Naval War College. He is designated as a Joint Qualified Officer.
