Profile
Professor Kornatz teaches the Maritime Staff Operators Course, lecturing and moderating seminars on Joint concepts and capabilities, maritime command and control, operational planning and execution. His research interests include the Civil War at sea, Operational Art, and U.S. Navy history.
Professor Kornatz graduated from the United States Naval Academy, earning a BS in Mathematics in 1980. He is also a 1989 graduate of the University of Southern California with an MS in Systems Management. Additionally, he graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval War College in 1995, earning an MA in National Security and Strategic Studies.
Professor Kornatz is a former naval aviator having flown SH-2, SH-60, UH-3, and A-4 aircraft in HSL, VX, and VC squadrons on both coasts. He served in staff billets at the White House, Pacific Fleet, and U.S. Naval War College. While stationed at the Naval War College he served as a Military Professor of Joint Military Operations, Chairman of the Joint Military Operations department, and Director of the Naval Command College (senior international college). Additionally, he volunteered for two Individual Augmentee assignments to Iraq: as Senior Advisor to the Iraqi Minister of Science of Technology in 2004 and as Base Command Group Commanding Officer of Al Asad Air Base in 2008-09. He retired after 30 years of service as a Navy Captain.
