Lieutenant Colonel Michael F. Mahony, U.S. Army, joined the NSDM faculty in January 2009, and currently is a military professor teaching Security Strategies.
He graduated from the University of Rhode Island (URI) and was commissioned as an aviation officer in the Regular Army in 1988. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from URI and a Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
LTC Mahony has served in a variety of command and staff assignments in Army tactical units located within the United States and Germany. He deployed four times to Iraq to include Desert Storm, served in Bosnia Herzegovina as Company Commander of an Aviation Task Force and also deployed in support of the humanitarian relief effort in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. His most recent assignment was as the Battalion Commander of 1st Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment from JUN 2006 to DEC 2008 where he commanded a 530 manned Task Force equipped with (24) AH-64D and (12) OH-58D aircraft during a 15 month deployment to Iraq in support of OIF 07-09. Since joining the NWC, LTC Mahony has been the course author and a subject matter expert for National Security and Defense Strategies.
