SHIPBUILDING/SHIPPING/SCRAPPING

GIA announces the release of a comprehensive global report on Maritime Containerization market. Global market for Maritime Containerization is projected to reach 731 million TEUs by the year 2017. Growth will be primarily driven by increasing sea trade, developments in shipping networks and transshipment hubs, encouraging investments in port terminal facilities, growing capacity and increased frequency of global maritime freight transport. The market also stands to benefit from soaring demand for oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) across Asia and the resulting growth in the transport of liquid and gaseous commodities.

China's rocketing trade and political engagement with Africa are driving the growth in think-tanks and policy fora on Asia-Africa relations
Africa-Asia Confidential, April 2012
- A new report from the United States' Social Sciences Research Council highlights the links between research and China-Africa trade and diplomacy. A Preliminary Mapping of China-Africa Knowledge Networks (http://www.ssrc.org/workspace/images/crm/new_publication_3/%7B392ea92d-ff5e-e111-b2a8-001cc477ec84%7D.pdf) - by Tatiana Carayannis, the Deputy Director and Africa Programme Director of SSRC's Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum, and Research Assistant Nathaniel Olin - reflects the huge upsurge in research, international conferences and trans-regional projects. These initiatives perhaps present a truer picture of China's position in Africa than vague 'win-win' optimism or the common 'China is a neo-colonial power' view.

Poor policy implementation, inconsistency, and lack of skilled manpower, among other factors, have combined to retard the actualisation of the huge potentials in the maritime sector of the Nigerian economy in the first quarter of this year

South Korea’s navy faces major domestic as well as external challenges - not only from North Korea. While domestic opposition still overhangs the construction of a new base on Jeju island, Seoul-Beijing diplomatic strains are meanwhile playing out in a lesser known East China Sea boundary dispute.
