Two local soldiers have achieved the rank of General by the U.S. Army. 
 
U.S. Army Officer Charles A. Flynn of Middletown was promoted to Brigadier General on Sept. 6 at a ceremony in Kansas.
 
Michael T. Flynn (CNW 2001) special assistant to the deputy chief of staff G-2 of the Army, pinned the General Star on his brother.
 
This marks the first time that two Rhode Islanders have served their country as generals at the same time.
 
Both soldiers are graduates of the University of Rhode Island ROTC program.  MG Michael T. Flynn was inducted into URI’s Hall of Fame on Saturday.
 
The State of Rhode Island and the Town of Middletown proclaimed it 'Generals Flynn Day' in honor of the two local generals.
 
The Flynn brothers have served extensive tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.
 
Brigadier General Charles A. Flynn is presently ActingCommander of the Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, where the promotion ceremony took place.
 
MG Michael T. Flynn, who has been nominated by PresidentObama to serve as Assistant to the Director of National Intelligence and awaiting Congressional confirmation, has served in a variety of command and staff positions including Commander, 313th Military Intelligence Battalion and G2, 82nd Airborne Division; G2, 18th Airborne Corps and CJ2, CJTF-180 Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan.
