The Knights of Columbus Council No. 750 in Oxnard is observing Veterans Day this year with a special Veterans Night dinner program that is free to all active duty military service members.
The event will feature keynote speaker Capt. David J. Sasek (CNW 2005), chief staff officer at Naval Base Ventura County.
Veterans Night is Tuesday at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 632 South D St. in Oxnard.
The event will include a display of military personnel vehicles and a Color Guard from Naval Base Ventura County. The program also will include a remembrance/memorial service and presentation of a wreath with a moment of silence for all American military service members who died serving our country.
"Traditionally, we have been doing this now for about 25 years," said Frankie Delgado of Oxnard, the council's grand knight. He said the Knights hope to see about 200 guests.
"This is the Oxnard's Council's way to honor these men and women who have served in the military for us. We recognize them during this time," Delgado said. The dinner is being held on Tuesday so local veterans, service members and others can attend another Veterans Day event if they wish on the actual holiday of Nov. 11.
Sasek is a native of San Leandro and a 2005 graduate of the U.S. Naval War College, where he earned a master's degree in national security and strategic studies. He also earned a master's degree in civil engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1995.
Sasek has served as the chief staff officer at Naval Base Ventura County since August 2010.
He has had several overseas deployments, including to Saudi Arabia for Operations Desert Shield and Storm, and has served in a range of operations positions in the United States.
He has been awarded the Legion of Merit; Meritorious Service Medal (five awards); Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards); Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards); and numerous unit and campaign awards.
