David K. MacEwen (CNW 2002), a Girard native, was recently promoted to brigadier general in the U.S. Army.

MacEwen received his promotion during ceremonies at Fort Myer in Virginia.

He is expected to become commanding officer of the Soldier Support Institute at Fort Jackson in South Carolina.

MacEwen held the rank of colonel before his promotion, and was the executive officer to the Army's vice chief of staff, Gen. Peter W. Chiarelli.

MacEwen graduated from Girard High School, where he lettered in football and tennis.

He attended Clarion University, where he was a distinguished military graduate.

MacEwen has served in the Army for more than 30 years, with tours in Germany, Korea, Iraq and the Balkans.

MacEwen graduated from the U.S. Naval War College, and his military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (three awards) and the Bronze Star (two awards).
