Profile
Rob Wilson was born in Chelmsford, Essex, in 1970 and spent a year working in the City of London prior to joining the Royal Navy as a Cadet in 1988. On completion of Fleet training in HMS Soberton and Cumberland, his first complement appointment was to HMS Dumbarton Castle, where he qualified as a Bridge Watchkeeper in the South Atlantic.
After front-line and training appointments as a Fighter Controller, he was selected as the first incumbent of an exchange programme with France, where he spent 2 fascinating years directing Crusaders and Etendards from the decks of the Aircraft Carriers Clemenceau and Foch.
Qualifying as a Principal Warfare Officer in 1999, he joined Captain F6 in HMS Montrose as PWO(A) and Operations Officer during her secondment to NATO's Standing Naval Force Mediterranean. In 2001 he joined HMS Fearless as Operations Officer as she prepared to deploy to the Middle East for exercise SAIF SAREEA II, which proved a valuable spring-board for the varied operational tasking which followed 9/11.
Following Fearless' earlier than forecast de-commissioning in Spring 2002, he was seconded to PJHQ on the Operation VERITAS team before joining Director General Human Resources (Navy) as the Junior Warfare Officer's Career Manager.
His first sea command was of the Minehunter HMS Ledbury, where he deployed to the Baltic before serving in the Fishery Protection Squadron. Promoted in 2006, he assumed command of the Type 23 frigate HMS SOMERSET in January 2007 and led her from refit, through operational deployment, to the conclusion of her next regeneration cycle.
Having recently completed the Senior Course at CNW Rob has joined the College’s Joint Military Operations faculty as the UK exchange officer, NSC6 coordinator and seminar moderator.
