CAPT McHale joined the Joint Military Operations Department faculty in September 2011. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 1985 and a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1991 along with a Weapon System Engineering subspecialty.
His sea service included tours on three SSBNs and three SSNs in both the Pacific and the Atlantic. He has served as a Navigator, Weapons Officer, Engineer, Executive Officer and Commanding Officer. His command tour on USS HENRY M. JACKSON (SSBN 730) included three strategic deterrent patrols and the initial stages of an Engineered Refueling Overhaul (ERO).
His shore assignments included Squadron Engineer and Squadron Deputy for Commander, Submarine Squadron TWO, Long Range Planning Branch Chief for the Strategy and Policy Division at the U.S. Strategic Command and Commanding Officer of the Naval Submarine School in Groton, CT.
