(Photo by James Brooks)NEWPORT, R.I. - Dr. David Stevenson, Professor of International History, London School of Economics, delivered a lecture on the last year of fighting during the First World War, on Sept. 20 at the U.S. Naval War College.
 
His lecture was wide ranging, examining the combat operations, economics, strategies, and high politics of war termination. His book on that topic, With Our Backs to the Wall: Victory and Defeat in 1918, was just published by Penguin Books and by Harvard University Press.
 
Professor Stevenson is one of the world's leading historians on international relations in Europe during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the origins, course, and impact of the First World War. He is the author of leading studies, books and numerous articles, on the First World War. Professor Stevenson studied for his undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge, where he is also completed his Ph.D. He is the recipient a prestigious Leverhulme Research Fellowship for research on the First World War.
