NEWPORT, R.I. – “Defeating the U-boat: Inventing Antisubmarine Warfare,” a new series of The Naval War College Newport Papers is now available online.

Written by Dr. Jan S. Breemer, the author recounts and assesses the British response to the World War I German submarine threat—a story that holds important lessons for the United States Navy today. The Royal Navy's refusal to consider seriously the option of convoying merchant vessels demonstrates the extent to which professional military cultures can thwart technical and operational innovation even in circumstances of existential threat.

This is the thirty-sixth of the Newport Paper series and it is also available for sale online by the Government Printing Office.
