NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Naval Historical Collection at the Naval War College (NWC) library recently acquired the papers of former NWC President Ronald J. Kurth.

Kurth , a Harvard Ph.D., a Russian scholar, and attaché to the Soviet Union, served as president from 1987 to 1990. He donated his College correspondence, speeches, and appointment calendars for the years 1988 -1990. They will be added to a previous donation that is held in the archives.

The widow of Captain Thaddeus Tuleja, USNR, a professor of history at St. Peter’s College, donated her husband’s resource source materials for a biography of Admiral H. Kent Hewitt to the College. Tuleja held the Naval War College Ernest J. King Chair of Maritime History in 1970-1971.

The collection includes interviews, photographs, actions reports, a draft biography, and Hewitt’s memoirs. Hewitt was a student at the Naval War College in the class of 1929 and stayed on for a year as a member of the Strategy, Operations, and Tactics Department. He served in World War II, where he participated in the invasion of North Africa in 1942, of Sicily and Italy in 1943, and of Southern France in 1944. A highly decorated officer, his expertise as an amphibious commander earned him four star rank.

The Naval Historical Collection contains more than 300 manuscripts and archival collections.
