NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Naval War College has selected Strategy and Policy professor Dr. John Garofano as the new Dean of Academics, and Terry Metz as the new Library Director.

Garofano’s appointment came in an e-mail announcement from NWC President Rear Adm. Phil Wisecup.
“John [Garofano] was the unanimous recommendation of a selection panel chaired by Prof Barney Rubel… I thank them for their thorough and professional work,” he said.

Garofano will begin his duties as the new dean August 17. Garofano arrived at NWC in 2003 in the National Security Decision Making Department. He received his B.A. from Bates College, a M.A. from Johns Hopkins University, and a PhD. from Cornell.

"I'm really honored to be given the opportunity to contribute in this capacity to the education of our military and civilian leaders," Garofano said. "We have the best curriculum in Professional Military Education, but we must always strive to improve it and keep it relevant to ongoing and future crises. I look forward to working with our fine faculty here in Newport, and withour Distance Education programs."

NWC will also welcome its new Library Director on September 28, when Metz arrives from Wheaton College where he was Vice President of Library and Information Services.
Metz received a B.A. in business administration and geography from Gustavus Adolphus College, and a M.A. in library science from the University of Minnesota.
