NEWPORT, R.I. - Joint Military Operations Professor Navy Capt. Kevin Brew returned recently from Afghanistan where he taught a seminar on military legal issues to Afghan Army judge advocates (JAGs).

KABUL, Afghanistan (January 2012) Joint Military Operations professor Navy Capt. Kevin Brew returned recently from Afghanistan where he taught a seminar on military legal issues to Afghan Army judge advocates (JAGs). (Photo courtesy Defense Institute for International Legal Studies)Brew was the leader of a mobile training team from the Defense Institute for International Legal Studies (DIILS) sent to Kabul to help the Afghan National Army (ANA) develop the ANA JAG School. He lectured on detention operations, human rights, international terrorism, border security non-international armed conflict and law of armed conflict.

“DIILS asked me to participate in this training opportunity because I had previously served as the legal advisor to the Afghan Ministry of Interior,” said Brew.

The seminar was collaborative in nature as the ANA legal advisors provided briefs on the new Afghan Constitution, the new ANA legal code, ANA military justice, and Islamic law.

Based in Newport, RI, DIILS provides mobile training seminars on law and leadership to international military law partners.
